The first time you see Lady with Fan, you will immediately be taken aback by its beauty. The colors are so vivid, so alive, that it’s hard not to feel a jolt of life surging through your veins. Gustav Klimt is the genius behind this painting. Klimt, a native of Austria, overcame grinding childhood poverty to become one of the world’s most beloved artists.

Klimt was a major influence of the Art Noveau and Viennese Secession movements and he is often thought to have laid the groundwork for Modernism and Art Deco. His themes of love, death, rebirth incorporated many Classical Greek, Medieval, Egyptian styles. He also used symbols depicting the liberation of art from the trappings of traditional culture. Almost a hundred years after his death, his influence can still be seen in many contemporary decorations, jewelry and art.
